Legend and myth suggest that King Nyentri Tsenpo descended from the heavens and was received as a king by the people of the Yarlung Valley. More than 400 Buddhist holy texts, known collectively as the'Awesome Secret', are said to have also fallen from the heavens at Yumbulagang in the 5th century. We saw a painting inside Yumbulagang, now a monastery, depicting the magical arrival of the texts.

I hope you are enjoying my blogs on Tibet. I would love to hear from you. You can do this in two ways. Firstly it could be a direct comment on my blog or secondly by email using the 'Contact' page on my website.
I will finish this blog with a photograph of the 'wind-horse' prayer flags festooned on the rocky ridge above Yumbulagang.
*** There are more photos of Samye and the Yarlung Valley in a gallery in 'Photographs' in 'Beyond the Sacred Mountains'.
