* David with his first view of Everest!
Ever since I was a little boy listening to my grandfather's stories of India during the First World War I have always wanted to travel and see the world. I suppose being a 'Coronation Baby' born in 1953 there has been a link with Everest, especially since Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norway stood on the summit when I was only ten days old! Of course you probably know by now that I believe Mallory and Irvine conquered Everest during the 1924 British Everest Expedition from the Tibet side of the mountain, but that is another story. I also closely followed the British Everest expedition led by Chris Bonington in 1975 when Doug Scott and Dougal Haston stood on top of Everest. My passion for Everest was ignited!
So I knew that one day I had to travel to the Himalayas to see the highest mountain in the world. Before Everest I had previously organised a trek to Annapurna Base Camp and the Annapurna Sanctuary in Nepal. Some members of that trek were keen to join Lynne and I on a trek to Everest.
Lynne and David at Dingboche near Everest Lhotse, worlds 4th highest mountain behind!
*** My poem 'Everest' is in the 'Poetry' section of 'Beyond the Sacred Mountains'.
Hope you are enjoying the sunshine!
Regards
David
