"Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life." Michael Palin
Welcome to my blog, photographic gallery, poetry anthology, travel journals and scrapbooking gallery.
For many years my wife and I lived abroad, two years in Iran and eighteen years in Hong Kong. During our time in the Far East we travelled extensively in Asia and the rest of the world.
I have written a personal journal for over forty years and continue to enjoy recording my travels in journals.
The photographs are a few of the many thousands we took on our travels. Some are digital copies of the original slides and prints taken with Canon SLRs. The recent photographs were taken using a Nikon 5100 DSLR, Panasonic TZ200 and my Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The majority of my poems are inspired by travel, while some are part of my spiritual journey.
Scrapbooking is an excellent way of recording my love of travel, photography and family history in a creative way.
Sadly Lynne died in June 2018 after a two year battle with cancer. However during her terminal illness she regularly said to me . . . "Keep on travelling!" Lynne also wanted me to walk the Camino de Santiago. I completed the Camino in May 2019 walking from St Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees, across northern Spain and out to the Atlantic Ocean at Finisterre. My Camino was a tribute to Lynne, the love of my life, my soul mate, best friend and travelling companion for 46 years. It was while walking the Camino that I discovered a passion for long-distance walking.
After walking the Camino de Santiago in April/May 2019 my travels have taken me to Singapore, New Zealand, Bali, Rome, Hong Kong, Nepal, the USA, Spain, Switzerland, France and Italy. In August 2020 I walked the full Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. In the autumn of 2021 I completed the entire South West Coast Path from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset walking for over 700 miles in two months. In February/March 2022 I spent a month in Nepal trekking to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo with Sherpa Himalaya. In June 2022 I walked the St Cuthbert's Way Pilgrimage from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Lindisfarne. In July/August 2022 I enjoyed a wonderful family 'road trip' in California, Nevada and Arizona. In the autumn of 2022 I walked for over 800 miles in two months on the 'Via Francigina' Pilgrimage from Switzerland to Rome.
In 2023 I was 70!!!!..... so I planned some major distance walks to celebrate my BIG birthday! In April/May 2023 I was back in Nepal trekking on the Annapurna Circuit with Sherpa Himalaya. In August 2023 I completed the TMB (Tour de Mont Blanc) with MacsAdventure. In October 2023 I walked the Offa's Dyke National Trail with MacsAdventure. 2023 was a special year of adventure, travel and celebration!!!
In February 2024 I explored the mountain railways and cable-cars of the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland with 'Great Rail Journeys' to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our (Lynne + David's) first overseas adventure together to this same area in August 1973!! We were students and just 20 years old!
In April/May 2024 I am walking the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way in Scotland with MacsAdventure. In July/August 2024 I am combining the Dingle Way, Kerry Way and Beara Way into one 35 day walking adventure in South-West Ireland with MacsAdventure. In November 2024 I return to the Himalayas trekking to both the north and south base-camps of Kanchenjunga with Sherpa Himalaya. In Spring 2025 I am travelling with my family to Japan . . . when they fly home I will stay on in Japan for a month to walk on the Kumano Kodo and Shikuku Pilgrimages plus walk on the ancient Nakasendo Way with MacsAdventure.
I continue to be excited by mountain regions, particularly the Himalayas. I am passionate about the British Everest Expeditions of the 1920's.
I hope you enjoy my blog, photo galleries, travel journals and scrapbook pages.
